RED SEAL® VENTILATION

  • Is the most airtight home one of the most energy efficient home?

Not necessarily. Controlled ventilation and air leakage are two different matters. Sealing unwanted air leaks is vital to home energy efficiency and to your confort environment. However, controlled ventilation in your attic is absolutely necessary and vital for the life of your attic, roof and HVAC systems located there.

  • How does attic ventilation improve energy efficiency in my house?

Proper ventilation promotes a cooler attic in the summer and a drier attic in the winter. By ejecting heated air from the attic, a good ventilation system, will help keep the rest of the house cooler with less energy usage. In cold months, proper ventilation prevents moisture build-up in the attic. As warm, moist air rises into a cold attic, it condenseates under the roof deck, causing the decking and shingles to distort and deteriorate.  Proper insulation mass, installed in your building's attic will keep the building warmer in the colder months. Excessive heat and excessive moisture  both lead to serious drywall,  roof and attic damage.

  • Where does moisture come from?

It comes from normal household activities, such as showers, laundering and cooking, activities that can release into your attic as much as three to five gallons of water vapor per day. If this water vapor becomes trapped in the attic, it can cause roof decking and shingles to warp and distort.  The lack of appropriate ventilation in your attic will cause numerous unnecessary repairs to your HVAC System and damage to your roof, not to mention the high cost of expenses associated with these damages.

  • What kind of ventilation system you recommend?

We recommend a solution that is a combination of products complementing each other in order to achieve the maximum energy savings and comfort possible. Each Red Seal Product we sell has a well defined purpose. We  recommend when warranted installation of additional ridge vents at the peak of the roof, vented soffits under the eaves, wind turbines, air hawks, ventilation  fans, solar fans and additional optimal  mass of insulation all complemented  with our high performance Red Seal Radiant Barrier.

However, depending upon the structure, age and condition of your roof, other systems may be recommended. Please keep in mind that our goal is to make your house as energy efficient as possible under the existing conditions. We will never sell additional products that you do not need in order to make a sale. Our reputation on the market with our existing and potential clients is much too important to us.

  • How does a ridge vent system work?
As wind blows around the house, it creates areas of high and low air pressure high pressure under the eaves and low pressure over the peak of the roof. Because air flows from high to low pressure; air in the attic will be pulled out through the ridge vent, to be replaced by air flowing in through the soffit vents. The system also takes advantage of thermal effect to ventilate even on calm days. We all know that hot air rises. The peak ridge vent allows this hot air to continue to go up and escape out of the house, with cooler air being drawn in through the soffits.
